Yo Ho Diablo at Oxford Arts Factory, 21st May

Dropped into the Oxford Art Factory last night to catch another round of friend's bands, as part of Yo Ho Diablo, hosted by the Moustache Train.

I was there to see Bon Marche and Junk, fronted by the lovely Taylor.

First up were Eye of the Spider who showed their inexperience on stage.  In particular, their opening song was a cacophony and frankly was quite awful.

I'm trying to be as constructive as possible in this blog, but I think these guys need to think about making their song structures more interesting and rehearsing a lot more.  Having said all that, I think they've got potential, and with practice might sound cool.

Junk definitely made their funky presence felt, with the five boys of the band wearing nothing but tight shiny gold spandex pants. They were a very tight and funky outfit, complete with whole band co-ordinated dance moves.  Totally cheesy in a very awesome way.

Taylor up front really held down the stage, combining really powerful tone with beautiful pitch and range, and the male vocalist had some great moments with some hip-hop-esque counterpoints.  If not for her, the mostly nude men would probably have been a little too flamboyant for general consumption.

Bon Marche were solid as usual, though I must admit I was distracted through most of their set with one of the Oxford Art's performance art pieces that was taking place in the glass cube next to the bar.

A patient in a rubber straightjacket was set upon by a creepy surgeon character who performed some grotesque operation on him, pulling out fake body parts and spurting blood around.  It was a disturbing spectacle set to the funky cuts of Bon Marche.

Interesting night all told.
