The Religion at the Hopetoun

Just got back from watching The Religion at the Hopetoun Hotel, one of Sydney's great live music pubs.

Joe Kelly was in fine voice as usual, and the band was incredibly tight - swinging through their rollicking yet intricate tunes with unswerving belief. The small crowd went wild after the single from their last EP, Innercile, which is just an unbelievably good song.

Unusually, The Religion played most of the set as a three-piece - just bass, drums and piano, with a new guitarist debuting late in the set. He seemed slightly unsure during the first few numbers, but demonstrated some beautiful tone through some intriguing solos later in the piece. He's a new addition, so I'm sure he'll find his feet soon enough.

I'm lucky to have a tangential connection with The Religion - Dom, their former bass player, sits opposite me at work. I've also met the drummer Mark socially, but now it just seems I'm bragging about my rock connections. Anyway, the point is, Dom has played me a pre-release copy of The Religion's debut album, and from what I've heard it's going to be very special indeed.

I can't wait to hear them on record, and can't wait to hear them again, with the larger adoring crowd they richly deserve.
